17. Portrait of Miss Kelvin

The Inspiration
This oil painting of a young English aristocrat was painted by John Hoppner in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century.
The Flowers
Florist’s inspiration: I was particularly drawn to the portrait’s contrast and sought to replicate it through the values, textures, colors, and overall style of the arrangement. Firm, dark foliage frames soft, frilly white focal flowers to mirror the contrast between the portrait’s subject and background. Pops of blue, green, and burgundy create dimension and movement, further contrasting with the painting's predominantly neutral color palette. Meanwhile, the sweeping garden style of the arrangement contrasts with the formality of the portrait and the subject's pose.
Recipe: Dark foliage surrounds white rose, peony, tulip, and ranunculus focal flowers that nestle in soft tweedia, dusty miller, and hydrangea. Burgundy hellebore, white lisianthus, and blue delphinium create additional layers of contrast, while clematis seed pods, sweet peas, and butterfly ranunculus add movement and whimsy.

Kristen Maddux is an enthusiastic amateur floral designer with a passion for creating beautiful arrangements and gifting them to bring joy to friends and family. Inspired by nature’s colors and textures, she enjoys experimenting with different blooms and styles, from composed mono-bloom arrangements to lush garden-style bouquets. Kristen’s interest in floral design was sparked after seeing the stunning florals created for her wedding at Anderson House in 2014, by Jo Oliver, owner of Flower Guild. Kristen’s dedication to the craft continues to grow under Jo’s mentorship and the guidance of the talented team at Helen Olivia Floral Design. When she’s not dreaming of flowers, Kristen serves as Director of External Affairs Research at Altria, where she leads a research team in the design and implementation of opinion research programs that inform the policy advocacy efforts of Government Affairs, Corporate Citizenship, and Regulatory Affairs.
