About
Art in Bloom DC
Art in Bloom DC is a celebration of fresh florals and art, giving the Washington, DC community an opportunity to view an interpretation, not a re-creation, of a specific artwork or collection or theme (including architectural inspirations) rendered in a floral medium.
Each year, many of DC’s most creative and innovative floral designers have come together to showcase their unique style, vision, and skill through this display of flowers.
The vision of bringing the longstanding Art in Bloom concept to DC was first brought to Anderson House by florist Ashley Greer of Atelier Ashley Flowers in the Spring of 2021, as a chance to showcase the talents of the DC-area floral designer community, as well as a joyous reason to come together (albeit in small groups) during the midst of the Covid crisis. It is our mission to highlight the immense floral talent of the Washington, DC area while providing entertainment and education through the display of floral sculptures inspired by the art and architecture of Anderson House.

Anderson House
In the spring of 1905, Anderson House was completed and took its place as one of the capital city’s most fashionable mansions—a “Florentine villa in the midst of American independence” as a local newspaper declared. Architects Arthur Little and Herbert Browne of Boston designed the mansion as the winter residence of Larz Anderson, an American diplomat, and his wife, Isabel, an author and philanthropist.
For more than thirty years, the couple enjoyed their Washington home as a showcase for their art collection, a backdrop for entertaining, and a home from which they explored what they considered “the most beautiful of American cities.”
When Larz Anderson died in 1937 with no children, his widow oversaw the gift of Anderson House and its contents to the Society of the Cincinnati, of which Larz had been a devoted member. The Society was founded in 1783 at the close of the Revolutionary War by officers of the Continental Army and their French counterparts to preserve the ideals for which they had fought. These officers’ descendants, like Larz Anderson, have perpetuated the Society as a nonprofit historical and educational organization that pro- motes increased awareness of and appreciation for the American Revolution and its legacy.
Today Anderson House, a National Historic Landmark, serves as the headquarters of the Society of the Cincinnati and its American Revolution Institute, which fulfills the Society’s historical mission through its library, museum, classroom, and battlefield preservation programs.

The Art in Bloom Movement
Art In Bloom is the name long used for various annual floral exhibits held in major art museums around the country.
The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston hosted the original Art in Bloom exhibit in 1976. Local florists and garden club members created floral arrangements to correspond with the museum’s art collection.
Explore Art in Bloom beyond DC
The Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, the North Carolina Museum of Art, de Young Museum, and the St. Louis Art Museum have hosted similar exhibits.

Takes a Village
Art in Bloom DC is a largely volunteer-led labor of love by the local community. We are so grateful for the the dedication and support of our event co-chairs, host venue, photographers, and event production partners. Without these community- and art-minded partners, the exhibition would simply not be possible.
