15. Portrait of Isabel Anderson
Wilding Flowers Co. and Kentlands Flowers & Bows
Tonya Jones
2025 installation - English Drawing Room
The Inspiration
DeWitt M. Lockman painted this portrait of Isabel Anderson and her pet macaw, Anna, in the late 1910s, when Isabel was in her early forties. On loan from the New Hampshire Historical Society.
The Flowers
Florist’s inspiration: Isabel's dress embodies a timeless and understated elegance. Its warm jewel-toned hues, though somewhat monochromatic, evoke a sense of effortless luxury, ease, and tranquility. The flowing lines of her dress and shawl draw us into the portrait, wrapping us in its serene atmosphere. The darker, complementary and moody blossoms lend to that calm. Then, our gaze shifts rightward to a brighter focus, a handful of unexpected, cheerful, lighter and spirited blooms. A lively turquoise parrot with a golden head commands attention, its vibrant presence introducing a touch of whimsy. Yet, despite its playful energy, the bird maintains a sense of stability, strength and resilience...Is it a beacon of hope? A source of comfort? Or perhaps, a symbol of freedom?
Recipe: Delphinium, roses, anthurium, thistle, amaranthus, orchids, allium, foraged branches, dried grasses and hydrangea, palms, bird of paradise and plumosa fern
