- SECOND FLOOR OLMSTED GALLERY, CEREMONIAL KATANA (SWORD), MADE IN JAPAN, 19TH CENTURY
Photographed by Amiee Custis Photography
Florist’s inspiration: Inspired by the gently curved blade of the samurai sword with intricate carvings on its ivory scab- bard—I’ve created a contrast of the strength and power of a samurai sword against the fragility and delicacy of flowers. This is my interpretation of the duality of traditional power (samurai sword) and fragility (flowers). This also represents the balance between power and beauty in life. The botanicals are care- fully chosen for floral expression—their meaning in the Japanese culture and how they relate to some of the key principles of samurai.
Recipe: Pussy willow (yanagi), Japanese silver grass (susuki), chrysanthemum (kiku), orchid (ran)
