Figures at the Crucifixion
This 16th century gilded polychrome wood panel shows mourners at Jesus’ crucifixion, several of whom look up towards the empty center of the sculpture, where a cross would have originally been placed. It is one of three in the room depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ. All were likely made in Spain, although possibly in a Spanish colony in the Americas.

The sculpture of 'Figures at Crucifixion' intrigued me immensely. The linear design with 3 elements of depth made me think of a grid-like Ikebana style floral design. I interpreted the sculpture using Equisetum Rush, Cymbidium Orchid and 2 shades of Mokara Orchid, these being the primary focal blooms. I created a grid-like structure using the Equisetum Rush and incorporated the Orchids as the faces of the figures; the Mokara and other floral elements represent the flowing fabrics of the garments worn.
